The importance of unstructured play in child development

As children, it was common to hear our parents tell us to go outside and entertain ourselves. As we have grown up, it has become more common to be involved in our children’s lives. This is because we want to provide them with the best start and support possible when it comes to their learning.

One of the biggest misunderstandings when it comes to giving your child the right start and support is by taking control and scheduling everything in their lives. It is actually more beneficial for children to take part in activities such as unstructured play as it is beneficial to their development. Whilst some children may require a little more supervision, it doesn’t mean that we should completely ignore the importance of unstructured play in a child’s development.

Here is some advice on why you should get started with your child.

Creativity

Unstructured play increases creativity in children. With the freedom to create their own games, children will begin to think a lot more creatively and out of the box. You may find that sometimes that decisions lead them to messy play, but it means that they will be using their imagination to the maximum. 

Problem-solving

It assists little ones with their problem-solving skills. In their own lives, children will come across their own hurdles and face challenges that such as turn taking and solving problems. It’s in these situations that children will begin to establish and understand vital skills that can be used in their education as well as at home with family and friends. Problem-solving is a key skill needed to improve cognitive development.

Motor skills

It helps children with their motor skills. Through unstructured play, your child will learn how to do simple acts that will be helpful in their grown life such as grabbing a bottle and holding a pen.

Encourage your child by limiting their screen time and letting them get messy outdoors. Let them take the reins and see where they go!
