Teaching Your Child to Overcome Obstacles

Unfortunately parents are unable to control the life challenges that their children will face. However they can help to prepare them for these obstacles by developing their coping skills. Read on for some helpful advice from a boarding school in Ireland, on teaching your child how to
overcome obstacles…

Be a good role model

Children learn from their parents, so it is important that you role model a ‘can do’ attitude for your child to follow. Show positivity and motivation when you come up against a challenge, to help your child learn how to work through their own difficulties.

Encourage a growth mindset

Encourage your child to foster a ‘growth mindset’. A growth mindset will support your child through many challenges and setbacks. Children with a growth mindset believe that their abilities will improve over time. This encourages them to keep trying and to see mistakes as learning
opportunities.

Take them out of their comfort zone

Improve your child’s confidence by encouraging them to explore outside of their comfort zone. This will allow them to experience uncomfortable feelings in a safe environment. Trying new experiences will help them to learn and it will also grow their independence.

Give more responsibility

To help your child develop a resilient attitude, you will need to give them more responsibility. Entrusting your child to complete tasks alone will help to boost their confidence. Ask your child to help with some simple jobs around the house, such as tidying up or feeding a pet. This will increase
their feelings of competency.

Be supportive

Encourage your child to talk to you about their dreams and aspirations, and discuss what steps they will need to take in order to reach their goals. Be there for your child when they need reassurance and make sure they know that they always have your support.
