Easy ways to live more sustainably as a family
With everything that goes on in a typical family day, it can be hard to think about the environment. Fortunately, sustainability doesn’t need to be a huge effort, and it doesn’t mean turning your life upside down.
Making small changes to your everyday habits can help make a big difference. You just need to be a bit more mindful of what you do and how you do it, without feeling like you’re constantly sacrificing.
Drive less
Let’s face it, we all drive more than necessary. And every time you hop in the car, you’re adding to pollution. Try walking or cycling whenever you can – especially for short trips. Not only is it better for the environment, but it’s also an easy way to exercise more.
If you want to keep the option of using the car occasionally, you can always take out one-day car insurance. This is a simple way to save money, too, as you won’t be paying for an annual policy you don’t use.
Switch to LEDs
Swapping out old light bulbs for LED ones is one of the easiest sustainability improvements you can make. They use 80% less electricity than halogen lights, which also means won’t pay as much on your energy bills. Plus, LEDs last longer, so you won’t have to replace them as often.
Eat less meat
Another simple, eco-friendly change you can make is to lower your meat consumption. Research shows that low-meat diets produce lower levels of greenhouse gas and use less water.
You don’t have to go full vegetarian, but how about having meat-free meals a couple of days a week? You might be surprised at how tasty some plant-based meals can be. And you’ll be doing your bit for the planet at the same time.
Save water
Saving water is something we all forget about. It doesn’t take much – turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or fix a leaky tap. Even switching to a more efficient showerhead can make a big difference.
The less water you use, the less energy needed to pump and treat it, which cuts down environmental impact – as well as your energy bills.
Have some positive changes, together
Making your family life more sustainable doesn’t have to mean making big sacrifices. Small changes like the ones suggested above can all add up.
You don’t have to go all in at once, just start with what feels doable. Over time, you’ll see the benefits, both for the planet and your family. And you might even save a bit of money along the way.
