How to Raise an Environmentally Conscious Child

As the impact we make on the planet is only becoming more important, children should be prepared to learn about how the environment in their local area can be improved for the sake of the world. In fact, new government measures suggest that we will be moving towards a more economically friendly country that our children should be aware of.

To raise an environmentally conscious child for the future, take a look at these top tips from a junior school in Somerset.

Take them gardening

Show how your home has a breadth of plants and flowers that help boost the levels of oxygen we have in the region. Get your child involved in adding new seeds to the garden or consider making a veg patch for them to get stuck into. Growing vegetables or fruit is a great way to show your child the impact of air miles on the food we buy in store, and it’s much more rewarding being able to eat something you’ve grown by yourself!

Take part in outdoor activities

There are a lot of small activities children can take part in to show the impact we’ve made on the planet. Litter picking is one such way, as well as orienteering to show different parts of your local area and how nature is a big part of that. Speak to your child about the impact these activities have and how their help will play a big part in improving your local area.

Show them media that speaks about the environment

There are a lot of TV shows, films and educational books suitable for children that talk about the impact of climate change, recycling and conserving energy in the home. If it’s shown in a friendly yet educational way children are more inclined to take notice and ask questions about it to their parents. A lot of schools now also adopt the approach to educate students on how the warming of the planet will affect many of us in the future.
