Top activities in O’ahu, Hawaii

The third largest Hawaiian island, O’ahu is home to the majority of the Hawaii’s population. This makes it a great place to visit as it offers an abundance of natural beauty, blended with a huge choice of activities. From the relaxing to the adventurous, the tourist must-sees to the hidden gems, here’s my top pick of activities in O’ahu, Hawaii.

If you’re planning a trip to O’ahu, you may feel a tour is a great way to make the most of your time there. You’ll find lots of ideas for Oahu Tours from a variety of companies. You can choose from a wide range of transportation too – buses, boats and helicopters!

Catch the sun and surf at Waikiki beach

Waikiki Beach in the area of Honolulu is hugely popular, and it’s easy to see why. With a long stretch of white sand and crystal clear, bright blue water, its a heavenly scene. The beach is also ideal for swimming surfing, snorkelling, sunbathing, playing volleyball – you name it. Waikiki also offers a vast array of accommodation choices, alongside restaurants, bars and nightlife. This is another reason why many visitors stay nearby and make use of the beach.

As well as general beach activities, there are plenty of snorkelling tours, boat rides and more. I would highly recommend the glass-bottom boat tour. Guests get an unencumbered view of life below the ocean surface, including one of the many shipwrecks on the coast of Oahu.

Hike Diamond Head Crater

Hiking to the top of Diamond Head Crater is another fantastic activity in Honolulu. You’ll secure beautiful views of the island and its stunning scenery. The hike is fair steep, but not overly challenging. It begins from the middle of the Diamond Head volcanic crater and climbs about 500 feet up to the top of the rim. Here’s where you will be rewarded with panoramic views.

As it is part of a state park, there is a $5 entrance fee. While it’s not a prohibitive amount, it is just useful to be aware of this.

Marvel at Manoa Falls

This 150ft tall waterfall is a beautiful sight. The trek to reach the falls is moderate in difficulty, so generally fine for families and casual hikers. As well as marveling at the falls, the trail to reach them is itself a wonderful way to soak up the flora and fauna of this tropical paradise.

It’s such an iconic setting, you may feel you’re in a film set. And you’d be right – Jurassic Park was partly filmed here, alongside scenes from Lost.

Enjoy the food

Hawaiian food is really unique, and differs so much from mainland USA. Taking a trip to O’ahu is a great opportunity to try something new. Personally I love a poke bowl. And while they have become popularised across mainland US and countries like the UK, an authentic Hawaiian poke bowl is on another level. Poke brings together diced cubes of raw fish, or cooked seafood such as prawn, served on a bed of rice or salad. There are tonnes of extra toppings and sauces too, so you can make it how you want it.

Other great foods to try include loco moco, kalua pork, shave ice and dole whip.
