Food & Drink Eco champions
I’ve been sharing a lot more on my blog about food & drink products that have strong eco-credentials and are reducing pressure on the environment. My Huski Home travel cup review is one of these posts. This reusable travel cup made from rice husks has to be one of my best finds of 2019.
I wanted to expand on this. I’ve spend several weeks looking into companies which are doing their bit for the environment in different ways. I’m super proud to now be able to share with you my food and drink sustainability champions. These products taste great and you can feel smug eating and drinking them knowing you’re helping the planet :o)

- Two Farmers Crisps – made in Herefordshire, Two Farmers crisp are in a 100% compostable bag. This is pretty innovative for the snack market. And they taste so good! The salt and cider vinegar in particular are delicious.
Wonder foods and treats
- Lovegrass Ethiopia Teff pasta – Teff is a bit of wonder food. It is high in protein, fibre, natural gluten and dairy free, and low in salt, sugar and fat. The brand, Lovegrass Ethiopia works directly with local farmers to create a market that pays them a fair price. This enables them to invest and grow their own small businesses.
- Seed and Bean – Indulging in chocolate doesn’t get much more feel good than this. Seed and Bean uses 100% compostable foil, made from Natureflex™. This is a specially sourced, flexible cellulose film made from eucalyptus wood pulp. The outer paper casing is recyclable too. And with flavours such as coconut and raspberry, or lavender, this is a must-try brand.
- Spare snacks – This snack company turns unwanted fruit and veg into air-dried crisps. They support British farmers by purchasing any produce that wouldn’t be sold to the mainstream market. Usually this is due to size, colour or shape (which is just so daft, isn’t it?). Currently in the range are beetroot, apple or pear varieties.
- Silly Greens – If you’re interested in wonder foods, microgreens are packed full of nutrients. They can be hard to buy though, as they have a short shelf life once picked. Thankfully, Silly Greens will post live seed packs for homegrown windowsill greens, which grow indoors and under natural light. Once grown they liven up all sorts of dishes – pasta, salads, pies, soup, anything you fancy really!
Sustainable Packaging
- Buttermilk chocolate caramel sea salt fudge – This snack bar from Cornish artisan confectioner Buttermilk is wrapped in a compostable cellulose packet. This of course doesn’t pollute the environment. Once the bar is finished (let’s face it, it won’t be around for long!) the wrapper can be added to your compost bin. Here it will decompose within 26 weeks.
- Steenbergs – I love Steenbergs, and now I know all about their green-approach I love them even more. All of Steenbergs’ packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable and they are a carbon-neutral company. Steenbergs moved into new premises at the start of 2007 that include environmental features. Think sun pipes, green energy, and solar panels.
- Flawsome drinks – These juices are made from fruit which otherwise would be discarded due to size, weight or appearance . Again, how crazy is that so much food is rejected? Flawsome drinks turn this food ‘waste’ into a delicious drink. They are also in recycled glass bottles and sustainable packs.
- Reliquum plum spirit – This very moreish plum spirit is made using left-over fruit from a family-run fruit and vegetable farm. The farm itself has a zero-waste approach. The bottles are 100% recyclable with no plastic packaging.
Suppliers
As part of my research for this post, I also came across plenty of food suppliers who are definitely champions of sustainability. Although it makes the post a bit longer, I really wanted to share these amazing companies with you.

- Abel and Cole – Synonymous with organic, sustainable food boxes, delivered to your door, Abel and Cole are the ultimate in green food suppliers. To keep your food cold, Abel and Cole use Woolcool made from recycled British sheep’s wool. This is an environmentally friendly way (with reusable material) to keep products cool for longer. They even take away your packaging to reuse. In addition, their delivery method makes sure they work on a rounds basis with the shortest distance between drops. This goes a long way to reducing pressure on the environment.
Fruit and vegetables
- Field Fare – Launched more than four decades ago, Field Fare has been looking after the environment ever since. They offer direct from the field frozen fruit and veg sold in a loose, scoop and serve format. Field Fare is encouraging customers to use their own bags and containers. If they do need a bag, then Field Fare have launched biodegradable bags for customers to use. The company also sells ready meals, which use sustainable FSC certified paper sleeves and mono-material plastic trays. These contains 80% recycled material.
- Riverford – Organic recipe boxes, fruit and veg and organic fresh meat. Riverford demonstrate their commitment to reducing reliance on plastic by supplying most of their veg loose in in recycled, returnable and recyclable cardboard boxes. By the end of 2020, Riverford will using home compostable plastic for all punnets and bags. These will be made from renewable materials which are quick to break down.
Supporting local
- Wigston Fields News and Deli – This former newsagents in Leicester has been transformed into a deli. It sells products from over 35 local suppliers. Still selling the basics such as newspapers, customers can also pick up locally made bread, pastries, eggs, vegan cheese, cider and beer, and many more delights.
- Essential Trading – Essential Trading wholesales, manufactures and distributes vegetarian wholefoods. You can find their items in stores across the UK. You can also buy in bulk from their online wholesale store. They specialise in ethically produced, organic, Fairtrade and ‘free from’ food. While sourced from across the world, they never transport by airfreight.
Organic offerings
- Planet Organic – With shops across London, and an extensive online store, you can choose from organic fruit and veg, organic meat, sustainable fish from British waters, and many more feel-good products. The business is run sustainably too, only using fully recycled paper bags to pack shopping. Other examples include its use of compostable take-away coffee cup lids in their cafes.
- Eversfield – Eversfield delivers grass fed meat boxes & organic vegetable boxes to your door, and also uses Woolcool to keep your purchases chilled. The company has also recently started its own packaging reuse scheme which allows customers to return the packaging for free so it can be used again. A great idea to work towards less waste and greater sustainability.
- Better Food – With three stores in the Bristol area, Better Food is a champion of organic, ethically sourced, and local produce, as well as reductions in packaging. In its largest store in St Werburghs, a 41 product packaging free wall has been installed, where shoppers fill up their own containers with cereals, grains, nuts and other items. The store also offers a wide range of self-serve products including eggs, wine and soap.
What a list!
What a phenomenal list of companies doing amazing things to reduce pressure on the environment, in a variety of ways. As for the rest of us, let’s get busy shopping with these brands and enjoying their tasty wares, while knowing that we’re helping in our our way too.
Let me know your favourite sustainability champions…

All of the information in this blog post has been sourced by myself and the links have been included to be helpful, they are not at the request at any of the companies on the list. I contacted the majority of those on the list for information/images.
I did receive a free delivery from Abel and Cole but not for the purposes of this post and I was under no obligation to write positively about them.
